Our Mechanical Breakdown Insurance (MBI) policy is a smart addition to your motor vehicle insurance portfolio, covering you in case of sudden and unforeseen mechanical and electrical failure.

MBI can only be purchased at the time of vehicle sale when purchased from a Protecta approved Dealership. Your dealer will discuss the best option for your new vehicle. Not all cover types are available at every dealership.

Our Cover Options at a Glance

All our insurance packages cover most major mechanical, electrical, and electronic components, including labour. You can choose from our OptimumMaxi, and Kinetic policies. Each provides a different set of qualifications and level of coverage:

Optimum

  • Vehicles up to 225,000 km at the policy start date
  • Vehicles no more than 20 years old at the expiry of the policy.
  • Vehicles that are petrol or diesel

Maxi 

  • Vehicles up to 300,000 km at the policy start date
  • Vehicles no more than 20 years old at the expiry of the policy.
  • Vehicles that are petrol or diesel
  • See the Summary of Cover for further information on claim limits, policy benefits and optional benefits

Kinetic

  • Vehicles up to 150,000 km at the policy start date
  • Vehicles no more than 15 years old at the expiry of the policy.
  • Vehicles that are EV, PHEV or Hybrid

Note: While an MBI policy is always recommended when purchasing a new vehicle, it cannot replace a manufacturer's obligations or warranties. An MBI policy is recommended after your warranty has expired—most mechanical issues come out of the woodwork once your manufacturer's warranty has run out.

Enjoy Our Out-of-Town Cover for All Types of MBI Insurance

Enjoy a worry-free and insured out-of-town drive with any of our MBI Insurance packages. Our Optimum, Maxi, and Kinetic insurance covers:

  • Travel costs if your vehicle has broken down more than 100 km from home and your vehicle is unusable due to repairs for a period exceeding 72 hours
  • Accommodation costs if your vehicle has broken down more than 100 km from home
  • Vehicle repatriation costs if your vehicle has broken down more than 100 km from home

Policy Terms and Conditions

Claim Limits and Excess 

It’s a great idea to read your Policy Conditions which include important details about the limits of your insurance cover.

Your Claim Limit and Excess depend on your vehicle type and the amount of kilometres on your odometer at the policy start date.  You can find your Claim Limit and Excess in your Certificate of Insurance.

Servicing Requirements

Regular servicing of your vehicle is required to maintain the integrity of the vehicle and cover under the policy.  Please ensure the vehicle is serviced in line with the manufacturer’s requirements and intervals.  Where the manufacturer requirements are unknown, we request you service your vehicle as per the following:

  • For petrol vehicles: Every 15,000 km or within 12 months, whichever comes first. 
  • For diesel vehicles: Every 10,000 km or within 12 months, whichever comes first. 

Note: The servicing required to be carried out should follow your Vehicle Service Programme. Failure to complete the service requirements may result in any associated claim being declined. Protecta requires your servicing to be carried out by a registered MTA workshop to offer you the most protection.
