Don't let these mistakes invalidate your vehicle insurance

You might think that just by having vehicle insurance that you are covered for everything that could happen. Especially when you have Full Comprehensive vehicle insurance. However this isn’t necessarily the case and there are a number of ways that you can invalidate your policy. Don’t fear though as Protecta Insurance is here to help you out!

Below are some of the common mistakes people make. Make sure you are not one of those people 😊

Do sweat the small stuff

This is the first thing to ensure you get right and that is paying careful attention to the questions being asked and answering truthfully at the time of buying or renewing a vehicle insurance policy. This is a must and we at Protecta Insurance always say it’s better to declare information upfront even if you don’t think it is important. Because often it is. Especially around your driving and claims history. And if you don’t understand what is being asked then just ask us. That’s what we’re here for

Don’t let delivering your neighbours Hawaiian pizza be your downfall

If you’ve declared that your vehicle is for private use only, then you shouldn’t be using it for any type of paid work without talking to Protecta Insurance first. So this can include anything from delivering pizzas and driving for hire, right through to teaching somebody to drive for money. Basically, if being paid is part of the specific reason for driving then it’s likely not covered. Of course if you are simply using your vehicle to get to your place of work (i.e. commuting) then you are good to go

Keeping it real….safe

Ensuring that your vehicle is fit for the road is key so make sure you do a regular check of your vehicle for obvious signs of an issue. Not only for your own safety and for others on the road around you but an unroadworthy vehicle is one of the quickest ways to say bye-bye to your vehicle insurance cover. Especially if you are involved in an accident and the condition of your vehicle helped contribute to it. Tyres in particular are one to keep an eye on. The only thing bald associated with a vehicle should be the driver. And watch out for when your WoF expires. Always good to have that as up to date and ship (or car) shape

Leave the racing to race cars

Involving your beloved Toyota Corolla in any sort of racing (including pacemaking, hill climbing, reliability trials, rallying, speed tests, or any other similar motorsport event) might be your idea of fun, however it is a no-no on the standard vehicle insurance front. Therefore stick to renting a car at the track designed for it and you’ll be sweet. Your Corolla will thank you for it too!

Always play by the rules

There are a number of other things that you could be doing, especially if you have an accident, that could rule out your car insurance cover. This includes:

• excessive speed
• racing on the road
• loss of traction
• using a mobile phone in a way other than using hands-free
• driving under the influence of alcohol and/or illegal or prescription drugs
• leaving the scene of an accident you are involved in

Keep an eye on your licence

Don’t forget to check the expiry date of your driver licence and always have it on you when you drive. Plus keep within the restrictions of it. So no going solo if you are a learner or late night cruising without a supervisor for those on a restricted. And remember where you, any driver, or anyone covered by this policy have a licence suspended, endorsed or cancelled then Protecta need to know about it as soon as possible, so please let us know

Just a few things here to keep in mind, amongst others, and if you have any questions then please don't hesitate to contact us
